Ascend above the world's largest burial mound — bigger by area than the Great Pyramid — in a tethered balloon for a perspective that ground visitors can never access. The moat-encircled keyhole silhouette of Emperor Nintoku's tomb is a UNESCO sight unlike any other on Earth.
What to expect
A specialist guide walks you through the World Heritage Mozu-Furuichi Kofun cluster, explaining the rituals, clay haniwa figures, and courtly power of the Kofun period. At the appointed time you board the tethered balloon gondola and rise 100m for a breathtaking bird's-eye view of the keyhole-shaped mound and its triple moats shimmering below. The flight lasts approximately 10 minutes and photographs are extraordinary. Afterwards, visit the adjacent Sakai City Museum for artefacts recovered from the mounds.
Good to know
Balloon flights are weather-dependent — check conditions on the morning of your port call. The Daisen Park area is ~15 min by taxi from Sakai-ko. Book the guided combo in advance; balloon-only tickets can sometimes be purchased on-site but sell out on clear days.
