Kaiyukan is consistently ranked among the world's top five aquariums — its centrepiece is a 5,400-tonne Pacific Ocean tank housing whale sharks alongside manta rays, creating an awe-inspiring underwater world that stops adults cold.
What to expect
Sixteen interconnected tanks trace the ecosystems of the Pacific Rim — from Alaskan kelp forests to the Tasman Sea — each occupying a separate floor of the spiralling building. The central Pacific Ocean tank is the crown jewel: descend past whale sharks, schooling yellowfin tuna, and graceful rays as ambient light shifts. Seasonal exhibits feature jellyfish galleries and penguin feeding sessions. Tempozan Harbour Village alongside offers excellent artisan dining.

Sakai-ko to Osaka-ko (aquarium): ~35 min via Nankai Line to Namba, then Chuo Subway Line to Osakako Station. Buy e-tickets in advance to skip the entrance queue — especially important on days when cruise ships are in port. Allow 2.5–3 hours inside. Combine with Dotonbori for a full day in Osaka.
