Shoot the legendary Pagsanjan Gorge rapids by dugout canoe — bankero paddlers steering you through 14 thundering cascades to the foot of a 91-metre waterfall — a raw, cinematic adventure filmed in 'Apocalypse Now' and utterly unlike anything else in the region.
What to expect
Your private vehicle departs Manila early morning, arriving at Pagsanjan (Laguna province) by 9–9:30 am when the gorge light is magical. Two barefoot bankero (boatmen) — masters of the rapids, whose families have paddled this gorge for generations — power your narrow dugout upstream through swirling green water, ducking under rock overhangs and riding white-water chutes. At the base of Pagsanjan Falls, a bamboo raft is lashed together on the spot; your bankero guide you through the mist and spray to stand directly beneath the 91-metre cascade. The downstream return is an exhilarating half-hour ride as the rapids work in your favour.
Good to know
Allow a full day: depart by 6:30–7 am from Manila to return comfortably by 4–4:30 pm. The boating portion takes 2–3 hours round-trip on the river. Book a private round-trip transfer in advance (ToursbyLocals or a Manila-based private driver) and pre-register at the official tourism office upon arrival. Wear clothes you don't mind getting wet; waterproof bags for cameras are essential. Not suitable on days of heavy rain/flooding.
