Rise before dawn and reach Padar Island's iconic ridgeline just as the sun ignites three differently coloured bays below. A short but steep hike rewards you with what many call Indonesia's most breathtaking viewpoint — and one of the world's great sunrise photographs.
What to expect
A sleek speedboat whisks you across the dark, glassy strait at 5 a.m., arriving at Padar's white-sand beach as the sky begins to blush. The 30–40 minute hike climbs stepped stone paths and rocky ridgelines, each switchback revealing a bigger slice of sky. At the summit, the view is staggering: a panorama of three curved bays — turquoise, black-sand, and the blush of Pink Beach — framed by dragon-spine ridges. Your guide shares the island's geology and ecology while you photograph freely. Breakfast is served on the boat on the return, as dolphins often race the bow.
Good to know
This excursion requires an early off-ship departure — coordinate with the ship's gangway team the night before. Wear trail shoes; the path is rocky. Bring a light layer for the boat ride and a fully charged camera. Book 2–3 weeks ahead for sunrise departure slots.
