Rinca Island is the insider's choice for dragon encounters — a wilder, less-visited landscape where Komodo dragons roam freely around the ranger station and along forest trails. Expert-led, unhurried, and dramatically close to nature.
What to expect
The boat docks at Loh Buaya, where dragons are known to congregate around the ranger station — your first sighting often comes within moments of stepping ashore. Your ranger leads you on the medium 'long trek' through open savannah and coastal forest, passing wild buffalo, deer, and Timor horses that form part of the dragons' natural prey. The island's dramatic landscape — golden grass, twisted trees, and sweeping sea views — makes every photograph compelling. After the trek, the boat pauses at a pristine snorkel site on the return to port.
Good to know
Rinca is closer to Labuan Bajo than Komodo Island, making it particularly practical for cruise itineraries with tight turnaround times. Allow 5–6 hours total. The 'long trek' (approx. 3 km) is recommended for the best wildlife encounters — confirm fitness level at booking.
