As dusk falls over Komodo National Park, millions of giant flying foxes pour from the mangroves of Kalong Island in a living, swirling river of wings against a fiery sky. Watch this astonishing spectacle from the teak deck of a private traditional Phinisi sailing vessel.
What to expect
The Phinisi glides out of Labuan Bajo harbour in the golden late afternoon, its carved teak hull cutting through water that turns molten at sunset. As the boat anchors off Kalong Island's mangrove shore, the sky begins to fill — first dozens, then thousands, then hundreds of thousands of Pteropus vampyrus (giant fruit bats, wingspan up to 1.5 metres) spiralling upward in a tornado of wings. Your naturalist guide explains their ecological role while staff serve Indonesian canapés and chilled Bintang or sparkling wine on deck. The return journey under a rising moon, with bioluminescent plankton flickering in the wake, is a fittingly magical end.
Good to know
This excursion times perfectly as a late-afternoon addition after morning dragon or diving activities — check your ship's all-aboard time, as the bat emergence peaks 30–60 minutes after local sunset. The Phinisi departs Labuan Bajo marina — short transfer from the cruise tender dock. Book the full private charter for the most intimate experience.
