Ride the only aerial cable car in the Caribbean — reopened in April 2026 with brand-new Swiss-engineered panoramic-glass cabins — up to the 2,600-foot summit of Pico Isabel de Torres. At the top, a Christ the Redeemer statue (a smaller echo of Rio's) presides over a botanical garden of 15,000 native plants and a 360-degree view sweeping from the Atlantic and Puerto Plata's red rooftops to the green northern cordillera. On a clear morning you can see all the way to Sosua and, some days, Tortuga Island.
What to expect
The glide up takes about 8-10 minutes and is smooth and quiet, with the view opening dramatically as you clear the tree line. Up top it's noticeably cooler and often misty; you'll wander shaded garden paths, the Christ statue plaza, and several railed viewpoints. Crowds spike when a ship empties at once, so timing matters. Allow about 1-1.5 hours at the summit.
Ship 'city tour with cable car' combos typically run USD 60-90/person and bundle the fort and old town with it. The cable car itself is so inexpensive direct that a private taxi doing cable car + old town + fort beats the ship tour on both price and pace for most couples. Verdict: book direct — the markup here buys you nothing the summit doesn't already give for USD 16.
Good to know
Go early before midday haze rolls in and before the lunchtime crush; last ascent is around 4:30pm. The standalone official website domain has been unreliable/parked recently, so book at the base-station ticket window or via a reputable local operator rather than chasing the .com. Bring a light layer — the summit can be breezy and damp — and cash for the ticket booth.
