Step inside a working Balinese compound belonging to a noble family in Ubud, forage for spices at a morning market, then craft a 10-dish feast under the guidance of a master cook — the most intimate cultural handshake Bali offers.
What to expect
Your morning begins at a local Ubud market where your host — a member of the Balinese noble Suarsa family — guides you through fragrant stalls of galangal, turmeric, kaffir lime and pandan, explaining their medicinal and ceremonial uses. Back at the open-air compound kitchen, you grind your own spice pastes (base genep) by hand, then cook dishes including sate lilit, lawar, and black rice pudding. The class culminates in a communal feast at a long table in the family garden. Recipes and a spice kit to take home are included.
