On a remote island north of Coron, giraffes, zebras, and Calamian deer roam freely alongside endemic Philippine wildlife — a surreal safari experience transplanted from Africa to tropical karst. Calauit Game Preserve is one of Southeast Asia's most extraordinary wildlife encounters.
What to expect
Depart Coron town by motorised bangka for the 1.5-hour crossing to Calauit Island, watching flying fish leap alongside the bow. Inside the 3,700-hectare reserve, a jeepney takes you through open savannah where Rothschild's giraffes and Burchell's zebras graze beside Calamian deer and bearcats. Guides share the remarkable story of how Ferdinand Marcos relocated these animals from Africa in the 1970s. The return journey crosses open sea with dramatic views of the Calamian archipelago.
Good to know
This is a full-day excursion (approx. 8–9 hours); confirm your ship's all-aboard time before booking — most Coron port calls are long enough. Bring sun protection; the open jeepney offers limited shade. Calauit is best visited on a private charter to control timing.
