Walk through 150 acres of living Swedish history at Skansen — 160 historic buildings, costumed artisans, Nordic wildlife, and a panoramic hilltop over Stockholm — with a private guide who brings every era to life.
What to expect
Founded in 1891, Skansen is the template for every open-air museum in the world and still the best. Your private guide leads you through farmsteads transplanted from Lapland and Dalarna, where costumed craftspeople demonstrate butter-churning, weaving and smithing in authentic period interiors. The Nordic zoo section brings you face-to-face with wolverines, lynx and the magnificent Swedish brown bear. From the hilltop viewpoint, Stockholm's waterways and islands fan out in every direction in a panorama that rewards every step of the climb. The blend of cultural immersion and wild Nordic nature is unlike anything else in Scandinavia.
Good to know
Skansen is on Djurgården island — combine with the Vasa Museum or ABBA Museum for a full Djurgården day. Entry tickets should be booked online in advance for summer; private guide bookings through Skansen's group department. Allow a minimum of 3 hours; a full half-day is ideal. The hilltop Solliden restaurant is a beautiful setting for lunch with Stockholm views.
