On the forested dunes of Juodkrantė stands one of the Baltic's most enchanting open-air galleries: over 80 hand-carved wooden sculptures of Lithuanian mythological figures — witches, devils, fairies and giants — hidden among the pines above the lagoon. Surreal, atmospheric, and completely unique.
What to expect
After the ferry crossing, you enter the Curonian Spit National Park and wind through Juodkrantė village — famous for its heron and cormorant colony — before ascending the forested Hill of Witches. Each sculpture is a masterwork of chainsaw artistry referencing a specific legend; your guide narrates them with the same drama the stories deserve. The lagoon glitters below through the tree canopy — bring a camera. The pace is leisurely, reflective, and deeply memorable.
Good to know
Juodkrantė is 25 km north of Nida, easily combined with a Nida visit for a full-day itinerary. The trail is mostly shaded but the ground is sandy — flat shoes or light trainers are ideal. Morning departures are best to avoid afternoon crowds on the ferry.
