Lithuania's finest museum lives inside a 19th-century sea fortress on the Curonian Spit — home to dolphins, seals, penguins, and a world-class aquarium. An unmissable spectacle in a jaw-dropping historic setting.
What to expect
Set inside a magnificently restored 19th-century sea fortress on the tip of the Curonian Spit, the Lithuanian Sea Museum is the country's most visited attraction — and for excellent reason. Penguins, Baltic seals, a spectacular dolphinarium with resident bottlenose dolphins, and a vast aquarium housing Baltic and tropical species all inhabit the fortress ramparts and moat. The dolphins perform in the open-air pool within the fortress walls — a theatrical setting unlike any standard aquarium. Children and adults alike leave genuinely moved by the closeness of the encounters. Allow at least 2.5 hours to do it justice.
Good to know
Take the Smiltynė ferry from the Old Ferry Terminal (5 min, runs every 30 min; passenger ferry is free southbound). The museum is a 10-min walk from the ferry landing. Dolphin shows run at set times — check juru-muziejus.lt for the schedule and pre-book online in peak season. Allow 3 hours total including ferry and walk.
