Discover Mozambique's natural world inside one of Africa's finest Manueline-style buildings — the Natural History Museum — then wander the fragrant colonial-era Tunduru Botanical Gardens with a private art and history guide. Intimate, intellectual, and utterly unhurried.
What to expect
The Natural History Museum's magnificent 1913 Manueline façade — all maritime stonework and twisted columns — is one of Maputo's most photogenic buildings, and the interior doesn't disappoint: beautifully curated taxidermy, geological specimens, and ethnographic artefacts tell Mozambique's layered story. Your guide then leads you a short walk to the walled Tunduru Botanical Gardens, planted in 1885, where jacarandas and traveller's palms shade meandering paths and local artists sometimes set up easels in the dappled light. It is one of Maputo's most peaceful corners and a wonderful counterpoint to the city's kinetic energy.
Good to know
The museum is typically closed on Mondays — confirm the day of your port call before booking. Allow 3–4 hours for both sites. The port is walkable (20 min) or a short taxi ride. Book your private guide via TourHQ at least one week ahead, specifying your language preference and focus (art, history, or natural history).
