Drive the stunning Coconut Coast 80 km north of Salvador to Praia do Forte — a pristine village beach with the TAMAR Project's legendary sea-turtle conservation sanctuary and reef snorkelling in gin-clear water.
What to expect
A private air-conditioned vehicle whisks you north along the Estrada do Coco — the Coconut Road — flanked by Atlantic rainforest and palm groves. Arriving in the car-free village of Praia do Forte, you'll visit the TAMAR base, where researchers share the work protecting five endangered sea-turtle species along 1,100 km of Brazilian coastline. Watch hatchlings in nursery pools and, seasonally (November–March), witness nesting or releases on the beach at dusk. After TAMAR, snorkel the natural reef pools, then settle into one of the village's open-air seafood restaurants for a long, languid lunch of grilled lobster and cold Brahma.
Good to know
Allow at least 7–8 hours for the round trip; best for port calls with a late all-aboard (19:00 or later). Book your private vehicle via a certified local operator (tourHQ Salvador) to pair with the TAMAR visit. TAMAR is open daily 09:00–17:30; arrive before noon to avoid day-tripper crowds.
