Stand before the original anchor and cannon lost by HMB Endeavour in 1770 and recovered centuries later — artefacts that literally changed the course of history. The finest museum in Tropical North Queensland, housed in a magnificent 1889 convent.
What to expect
The museum occupies the grand stone Sisters of Mercy convent, its high-ceilinged rooms displaying the original anchor and two cannons Cook's crew jettisoned to refloat the stricken Endeavour on Cooktown's reef. Galleries weave together maritime exploration, the gold rush that turned Cooktown into Queensland's second-largest city, and the living culture of the region's First Nations peoples. Expert staff are on hand to contextualise the collection. The shaded colonial courtyard is a serene spot to reflect before moving on.
