Delve into the soul of Martinique at two legendary AOC rhum agricole distilleries — Depaz, set on Pelée's slopes, and Saint James, in the pastoral north — for expert-guided tours and serious tasting sessions.
What to expect
The day opens at Depaz, whose estate sits dramatically on the fertile lava fields of Pelée — the same soils that destroyed and then renewed the land. Your guide explains the unique terroir philosophy of cane-to-glass production, and you taste aged millésime expressions poured by the estate team. The road continues to the architecturally beautiful Saint James Distillery and Rum Museum, where antique copper pot stills and vintage photographs narrate 300 years of Martiniquais rum culture. A proper paired tasting with local confiture and sugarcane sorbet finishes the session. You return to port with a curated selection of bottles tucked into your bag.
Good to know
Distilleries are in the north — allow a full half-day. Both distilleries welcome drop-in visitors but private guided tours guarantee reserved tasting rooms. Depaz: depaz.fr; Saint James: saint-james-rum.com. Check harvest season (July–November) to potentially witness active distillation.
