Step inside two millennia of Cretan history in a single private morning: the vast, rarely-crowded ancient city of Aptera and the haunting Venetian-Ottoman fortress rising from Souda Bay itself. An expert archaeologist guide brings both sites to life.
What to expect
Aptera sits on a dramatic plateau overlooking Souda Bay — Roman cisterns, a Minoan palace complex, an intact Byzantine monastery and sweeping views of the very bay your ship is anchored in. Your guide contextualises layers of civilisation that most visitors simply walk past. From there, a short transfer brings you to the water's edge for views across to the fortified Souda Island, one of the last outposts to fall to the Ottomans in all of Crete. The pace is unhurried and completely in your hands.
Good to know
Aptera Archaeological Site is open daily; admission is approximately EUR 8 per person. The Souda Island fortress is only visible from the waterfront (no public landings), so plan for a scenic viewpoint stop. Wear comfortable walking shoes — the plateau terrain is uneven. Both sites are within 15 minutes of Souda port.
