Trek the ancient mule path to Hydra's highest point and the 18th-century Monastery of Prophet Elias — donkeys, pine forests, and a 360° panorama that stretches to the Peloponnese. The island's most dramatic and rewarding physical experience.
What to expect
The trail begins at the edge of Hydra Town and immediately leaves the harbour crowds behind, climbing through fragrant pine and wild thyme with the sound of bells from the island's famous donkeys echoing below. At the summit, the whitewashed Monastery of Prophet Elias is a place of genuine tranquillity — resident monks sometimes welcome visitors and offer a glass of cool water. The panoramic view from here is staggering: the full arc of the Saronic Gulf, neighbouring Spetses and Dokos, and on a clear day the mountains of the Peloponnese. The descent follows a different mule path, dropping through the hamlet of Episkopi.
Good to know
The hike takes approximately 2–3 hours round trip; comfortable, grippy shoes are essential. Start early to avoid midday heat — aim to summit by 10am. The monastery requires modest dress (shoulders and knees covered). Pre-book the private guide to ensure availability.
