Journey inland from Akureyri to Goðafoss — the Waterfall of the Gods — then on to the ethereal volcanic landscape of Lake Mývatn, where steaming vents, lava castles, and nesting ducks create a scene that feels prehistoric. A private driver-guide makes this entirely at your pace.
What to expect
Your private guide meets you at Akureyri (a short Hrísey ferry ride away) and whisks you east along Route 1 to Goðafoss, where the horseshoe waterfall roars 30 metres wide and the story of Iceland's conversion to Christianity in 1000 AD comes alive. Continuing to Lake Mývatn, you explore the Dimmuborgir lava labyrinth — a rumoured gateway to the underworld — and the Skútustaðagígar pseudo-craters. The afternoon light over Mývatn in summer is extraordinary, with Arctic terns diving overhead. Return via Akureyri, Iceland's 'Capital of the North,' for a brief stroll before the ferry back.
Good to know
Full day — allow 8–9 hours total including the Hrísey ferry crossing. Depart on the earliest morning ferry from Hrísey to maximise time inland. Private bookings should be made at least a week in advance. Dress in waterproof layers — Mývatn's winds can be sharp even in July.
