Wander the honey-stone battlements of one of Genoa's best-preserved citadels with a private local historian at your side — views sweep across the bay, the Alps, and Cap Corse. This is where Columbus (some claim) was born, and every cobblestone tells the story.
What to expect
Your guide meets you dockside and leads you up through the medieval Haute Ville to Place d'Armes, gateway to the 15th-century Genoese citadel. Explore the Cathédrale Sainte-Marie Majeure, the Oratoire Saint-Antoine with its ivory Christ, and the tower where Columbus's birthplace is disputed but celebrated. The rampart walk delivers sweeping views of the turquoise gulf, the Balagne mountains, and the Revellata peninsula. Stories of Genoese sieges, Nelsonian naval battles, and the French Foreign Legion garrison breathe life into every stone.
Good to know
The citadel is a 10-minute walk from the cruise pier or a quick taxi. Most private tours run 3–4 hours, easily completed before a mid-afternoon all-aboard. Book at least 48 hours ahead. Wear flat, comfortable shoes — cobblestones are uneven.
