Climb to the twin sentinels of Gustavia's colonial past — the cannon-lined ramparts of Fort Karl and the candy-striped lighthouse — for sweeping 360° views over the harbour, the superyacht-dotted bay, and the surrounding islets. St. Barts' history and its most spectacular panorama, combined.
What to expect
Ascend the short path above Gustavia's waterfront to Fort Karl, where cannons still point seaward and the walls frame a postcard view of the harbour below. Continue to the restored lighthouse for a 360° panorama stretching to St. Martin and Saba on clear days. A knowledgeable local guide contextualises the island's unique history as a Swedish colony — the only Caribbean island ever governed by Sweden — and its Norman-Creole cultural roots.
Good to know
Both sites are within easy walking distance (10–15 min on foot) of the Gustavia cruise dock — no taxi required. Morning light is best for photography. Wear comfortable walking shoes; the path is paved but steep in sections. Combine with a stop at the St. Barth Municipal Museum (free) on the harbour at the base of the hill.
