Board a lovingly restored 1920s steam train and ride the legendary Douro railway line — one of Europe's most dramatic rail journeys — through terraced vineyards and riverside villages. Pure cinematic Portugal.
What to expect
The vintage steam locomotive departs from Régua's beautifully tiled railway station — itself a masterpiece of Portuguese azulejo art — and follows the Douro east through some of the valley's most spectacular terraced scenery. Open-air carriages and polished wooden compartments invite you to lean out and feel the warm Douro air. The train stops at Pinhão (famous for its azulejo-decorated station) before continuing to Tua, with views that stop conversation entirely. Wine and local snacks are sometimes served on board.
Good to know
The Comboio Histórico runs seasonally (typically May–October, weekends) and sells out well in advance — book directly via CP's website the moment your cruise itinerary is confirmed. Régua station is a 5-minute walk from the cruise dock. Check the return departure time carefully against your ship's all-aboard.
