Journey by ferry to Mykines — the Faroe Islands' westernmost and wildest island — where Atlantic puffins nest by the thousands on grassy clifftops. Walking to the lighthouse past burrows so close you can hear the birds is a wildlife moment of rare, unhurried magic.
What to expect
The 45-minute ferry crossing from Sørvágur is itself dramatic, threading through Atlantic swell past sea stacks draped in seabirds. On Mykines, the path climbs through a village of just a handful of year-round residents before opening onto cliffs alive with puffins, gannets, and fulmars. The iconic rope-bridge crossing to Mykinesholmur islet leads to the lighthouse at the island's tip — with 360° ocean views and puffin burrows at your feet. A local guide adds layer upon layer of natural history to every encounter.
Good to know
Ferry seats are strictly limited and sell out weeks in advance on cruise call days — book the moment your itinerary is confirmed. The crossing can be cancelled in rough seas; have a backup plan. Allow a full day: transfers from Runavik to Sørvágur plus the crossing take ~1.5 hours each way. Puffins are present May–August.
