Descend into one of Sweden's most spectacular limestone cave systems, roughly 11 miles north of Visby, where stalactites, underground rivers, and cathedral-like chambers create an otherworldly spectacle that took 5 million years to form.
What to expect
A knowledgeable cave guide leads you through a network of illuminated passages into chambers studded with stalactites and stalagmites sculpted over millennia by an underground stream. The caves maintain a cool, dramatic atmosphere year-round, and the deepest accessible sections feel genuinely remote and awe-inspiring. En route from Visby, the limestone plateau landscape of northern Gotland — juniper plains and ancient windmills — is itself deeply scenic. The guided tour lasts approximately 45–60 minutes underground; combine with a stop at the adjacent Krusmyntagården herb garden for a complete half-day excursion.
Good to know
Hire a private driver or taxi from the cruise pier (approx. 20–25 minutes each way) to reach Lummelunda; book in advance on a port day. Wear flat, closed-toe shoes — the path inside is uneven and can be slippery. The caves are cool (around 8°C/46°F) year-round; bring a light layer. Check all-aboard time carefully — allow 3.5–4 hours total for a comfortable return.
