Explore Suomenlinna, the UNESCO sea fortress spread across six islands, with a private guide — then retreat to a lakeside smoke sauna for an authentic Finnish ritual that has defined Nordic culture for 2,000 years. Unmissable and deeply restorative.
What to expect
A scheduled public ferry (15 min, EUR 3.80) or a private water taxi takes you across the glittering harbour to the island fortress, where your guide unlocks the King's Gate, the dry dock, and the eerie submarine Vesikko for a living history deep dive. After exploring the fortress ramparts with panoramic Baltic views, you transfer to a traditional smoke sauna heated with birchwood. The ritual of löyly (steam), birch-whisk scrubbing, and a plunge into the sea is followed by resting on a sun-warmed wooden deck with cold beer and salty roe canapés. A genuine, unhurried slice of Finnish soul.
Good to know
Helsinki cruise ships dock at Hernesaari, South Harbour, or Länsisatama — South Harbour is 15 min on foot from the market square ferry terminal. Suomenlinna is a UNESCO World Heritage Site; outdoor exploration is free once on the island, but some interior museums charge EUR 3–6. Book the sauna at least 3 weeks in advance as private slots are limited. Bring a swimsuit and sandals.
