Stride the ramparts of Scandinavia's largest medieval castle ruin, perched on a sheer granite headland above the Baltic. Hammershus is hauntingly beautiful — a bucket-list Nordic landmark that few Baltic itineraries include.
What to expect
Hammershus crowns a 74-metre granite bluff above crashing Baltic surf, its towers and curtain walls dating to the 13th century. Wander through the gatehouse, the great hall foundations, and the round tower with panoramic views over the Hammeren headland and open sea. The surrounding landscape is a protected nature reserve — heath, granite outcrops, and wheeling sea eagles overhead. Allow at least 90 minutes to do it justice; combine with a walk down to the nearby Hammersø lake for complete immersion in Bornholm's wild north.
Good to know
Rønne to Hammershus is approximately 25 km north — arrange a private taxi or hire a car at the port. The site is open year-round and never crowded in the early morning. Wear sturdy shoes; the terrain is uneven granite. All-aboard allows plenty of time if you depart the ship by 09:00.
