Cruise by boat through the sacred sea-caves of the Helligdomsklipperne — Bornholm's most dramatic coastal cliffs — then step into a world-class art museum built into the clifftop above. A double hit of natural wonder and Nordic culture.
What to expect
Board a small local vessel in Gudhjem harbour and motor north along the coast to the Helligdomsklipperne ('Sanctuary Cliffs') — dramatic granite faces carved by the Baltic into caves, arches, and columns that glow amber and rose in the morning sun. The boat weaves between sea stacks as the skipper explains the Norse legends attached to the rock formations. Back on land, the clifftop Bornholms Kunstmuseum houses a superb collection of Bornholmer painters from the island's golden age, displayed in a stunning modern building whose glass walls frame the sea below. Allow 2–3 hours total.
Good to know
Gudhjem is approximately 35 km northeast of Rønne — best reached by private taxi (30–40 min) or rental car. Boat tours run from Gudhjem harbour in season (May–September); check departure times locally as schedules vary by weather. The Kunstmuseum is a 10-minute walk from the harbour along a signed cliff path. Combine with a smoked-herring lunch at one of Gudhjem's legendary smokehouses for a perfect Bornholm afternoon.
