Experience the living soul of Palamos at its world-class Fishing Museum, then witness one of the Mediterranean's most theatrical fish auctions as the day's catch of prized Palamos red prawns — the most coveted in Spain — is sold in a frenzy of bids. Viscerally authentic and utterly unique.
What to expect
The museum, set dramatically on the working harbour, traces the 500-year fishing heritage of Palamos through beautifully curated exhibits including a restored fishing boat you can board. The adjoining fish auction (Llotja) bursts to life in the late afternoon as the trawlers return — the auctioneer's rapid-fire Catalan, the gleaming red prawns under fluorescent lights, and the buyers' paddles create an electric atmosphere. Afterwards, stroll the harbour for a plate of grilled gambes de Palamos at a quayside restaurant.
Good to know
The fish auction typically takes place between 5–6 PM — check the exact schedule with the museum when booking. The museum is a 5-minute walk from the cruise pier. Combined museum + auction guided visits must be pre-booked directly with the Museu de la Pesca. Pair with a sunset dinner at a harbour restaurant for a perfect full afternoon.
