Explore the dramatic coastal park on Cap-aux-Meules Island where crimson sandstone cliffs plunge into turquoise Gulf waters and hidden sea caves wait at low tide. This is the Magdalen Islands' most photogenic natural landmark, walking distance from the port.
What to expect
The trail at Gros-Cap threads along clifftops of vivid red and ochre sandstone sculpted by wind and sea over millennia. At low tide, you can descend to the base and enter the sea caves, their walls streaked with mineral hues of amber, rust, and cream. The views across the lagoon toward the dune systems of Havre-aux-Maisons are spectacular. Birdlife — cormorants, kittiwakes, and petrels — nest in the cliff faces throughout summer.
Good to know
The park is a short taxi or bicycle ride from the cruise pier — taxis are readily available at the port gate. Check the tide table before you go; cave access requires low tide. Allow 2–3 hours for a leisurely exploration. Bring a camera: the golden-hour light on those red cliffs is extraordinary.
