Reach the holy island of Kinkasan by private ferry, home to the gilded Koganeyama Shrine and hundreds of wild deer and monkeys that roam its ancient cedar forests. One of Japan's most spiritually charged and scenically dramatic landscapes.
What to expect
A 25-minute private transfer takes you to Ayukawa Port on the Oshika Peninsula; a 40-minute ferry carries you across to Kinkasan. Walk the stone-lantern-lined approach to the resplendent Koganeyama Shrine, said to guarantee prosperity to all who visit three years running. Your guide leads you along cedar-canopied trails where deer graze at arm's reach and Japanese macaques peer through the branches. Time permitting, a brief purification ritual at the inner shrine is a profoundly moving close to the visit.
Good to know
Allow a full 6–7 hours from the cruise port. Ferry schedule is tide-dependent — your guide will plan around it. Wear comfortable walking shoes; forest paths are uneven. Confirm all-aboard time is no earlier than 6 pm.
