Descend by candlelight into the hand-hewn limestone water tunnels carved by convicts beneath a UNESCO World Heritage gaol. One of Australia's most spine-tingling and authentic heritage experiences.
What to expect
Your expert guide leads a small group through the enormous limestone Gatehouse Complex before descending into the convict-dug tunnels, torch in hand, as stories of colonial hardship and ingenuity echo off the walls. Back above ground, the cell blocks tell the full arc of incarceration from 1855 to 1991 — some of Australia's most notorious criminals held here. The Torchlight evening tour (select nights) transforms the entire prison into something genuinely eerie and unforgettable. Allow 1.5–2 hours.
Good to know
Fremantle Prison is a 10-minute walk or quick taxi from the cruise terminal on The Terrace. Tunnels Tours run at set times and sell out fast — book directly at fremantleprison.com.au well in advance. Wear closed-toe shoes; the tunnels are wet underfoot. Gatehouse entry is free for independent browsing.
