Barrel down vast golden sand dunes on a toboggan, then board a private 4WD to traverse the wild interior of one of the world's largest sand islands — an adrenaline-and-scenery double act.
What to expect
Your open-air 4WD winds through paperbark forests and over unmarked sand tracks before cresting the dunes of the Tangalooma Desert — an unexpected inland sea of white sand that feels like the Sahara transplanted to Queensland. Toboggans are issued at the summit; adults and children alike find the steep descents addictively fast. Your guide shares the island's Mulgumpin (Moreton Island) First Nations heritage and points out endemic flora along the way. The 360-degree panorama from the top, with ocean on both sides, is genuinely breathtaking.
Good to know
Tours operate from the Tangalooma Resort and last approximately 2–3 hours; the half-day option fits comfortably within a port day. Closed-toe shoes are recommended for the dune walk. Pre-book directly with the resort as private guide availability is limited.
