Walk on Dambimangari Country with a Traditional Custodian ranger and hear the Wandjina creation stories that shaped this landscape. This intimate, on-Country experience is among the most profound cultural encounters available anywhere in the Kimberley.
What to expect
A Dambimangari elder and trained ranger guides your small group across a section of coastal Country, pausing at significant trees, rock formations and tidal flats to share oral histories, bush medicine knowledge and the meaning of Wandjina and Gwion Gwion (Bradshaw) figures painted on the rocks above. You'll learn to read the tidal calendar the way custodians have for 50,000 years — which plants signal the start of each season, where the freshwater soaks hide and how Country is still actively managed through controlled burning today. The group is strictly limited to 12 guests to preserve the intimacy and allow genuine conversation. The session ends with a smoking ceremony and the sharing of traditional foods gathered on the walk.
Good to know
This experience requires advance coordination with the Dambimangari Aboriginal Corporation and your expedition ship's shore team; book as early as possible as community availability is limited. Photography of sacred sites is restricted — follow the ranger's guidance at all times. Comfortable walking shoes, long sleeves and insect repellent are recommended.
