Paddle a sea kayak through the mirror-still mangrove channels of Yampi Sound at dusk, when the Kimberley wildlife is at its most spectacular and — in season — the water ignites with bioluminescent plankton after dark. An utterly magical, silent counterpoint to the drama of the Horizontal Falls.
What to expect
You launch from a protected beach in the golden hour, when the sandstone cliffs turn the colour of molten bronze and the mangrove channels come alive with the splash of mullet and the prehistoric silhouettes of herons stalking the shallows. Your guide pauses the group in a cathedral-like channel where a family of sea eagles roost each evening — the male often landing close enough to hear his talons grip the branch. As darkness falls the guide demonstrates the bioluminescence by trailing a hand through the water, igniting a cascade of cold blue fire around each paddle stroke. Chilled sparkling wine and hand-selected Kimberley cheese are served floating in the channel under an extraordinary Milky Way sky before the paddle back to the landing beach.
Good to know
Bioluminescence is strongest in the warmer months (October–April); confirm seasonal availability when booking. No kayaking experience is required — stable sit-on-top kayaks are used. The excursion runs late; ensure your all-aboard time accommodates an evening return. Insect repellent, a light long-sleeved layer and a dry-bag for valuables are strongly recommended.
