Tackle the moderate-to-challenging ridge hike above Vansittart Bay for sweeping 360° panoramas across the Admiralty Gulf, Jar Island, and the raw Kimberley coastline stretching to the horizon. This is one of the most dramatic viewpoints on the Australian continent.
What to expect
From the Zodiac landing, the trail climbs through spinifex and ancient sandstone, the effort rewarded at each turn by increasingly vast coastal panoramas. The 'difficult' route reaches an exposed ridgeline where the Kimberley coast unfolds in every direction — islands, reef, mangrove systems, and open ocean in a single, staggering vista. Your guide points out endemic flora, geological formations, and, if conditions align, migrating humpback whales offshore. The descent returns via a different route, passing additional rock art outcrops for a full cultural and natural immersion.
Good to know
Choose your grade honestly — the difficult trail involves uneven, rocky terrain and is not suitable for those with mobility limitations. Wear closed-toe hiking shoes, carry 1.5L of water minimum, and apply reef-safe SPF 50+. The full difficult-grade hike takes approximately 2.5–3 hours; factor this carefully against your all-aboard time. Confirm timing with your operator the morning of your port call.
