Fly by helicopter to the King George Falls — Australia's highest twin waterfalls plunging 80 metres into a remote gorge — then swim in the rock pool at their base, surrounded by sheer sandstone walls and absolute Kimberley wilderness. An experience so remote and so spectacular it defines the word 'bucket-list.'
What to expect
The helicopter banks into the King George River gorge and the falls appear suddenly — two parallel curtains of white water free-falling 80 metres into a jade-green pool, flanked by 100-metre sandstone walls streaked with iron and ancient mineral flows. You land on the rock shelf beside the falls, the roar and spray instantly enveloping you. Your guide leads you to the swim platform where the water is cool, clear, and hauntingly still away from the cascade. Saltwater crocodiles do not inhabit this upper freshwater gorge, making it a rare safe-swim opportunity in the Kimberley. The return flight traces the river to the sea, revealing the vast tidal delta in golden afternoon light.
Good to know
King George Falls is typically accessed on multi-day Kimberley expedition itineraries; confirm whether your ship's routing includes proximity to this site. Helicopter weight restrictions apply. Water shoes recommended for the rock shelf landing. This is a seasonal experience — falls are most dramatic April through July. Book as far in advance as possible.
