Glide through Hakata's storied backstreets aboard a lacquered rickshaw, dressed in an authentic kimono chosen to complement the season. Your jinrikisha puller narrates 1,500 years of merchant culture as you pause at flame-red Kushida Shrine, Hakata's spiritual heart, and the living-history Machiya townhouse museum.
What to expect
You begin at a Hakata kimono studio where attendants dress you in a seasonal silk kimono and photograph you before departure. Your rickshaw then carries you through narrow machiya-lined lanes to Kushida Shrine, where your guide explains the sacred Yamakasa festival floats stored within the grounds year-round. The route continues to the Hakata Machiya Furusato-kan, a beautifully preserved Meiji-era merchant townhouse, before a final loop past Canal City's dramatic architecture.
Good to know
The experience starts at studios within 15–20 minutes of Hakata Cruise Port by taxi. Allow 2.5–3 hours for the full kimono, rickshaw, and shrine combination. Book private slot in advance — kimono fittings and rickshaw availability are limited. Kushida Shrine is free to enter; Hakata Machiya Museum costs JPY 200.
