Drift in a flat-bottomed wooden boat through Yanagawa's 930 kilometres of ancient samurai canals, past weeping willows and whitewashed kura storehouses, guided by a singing boatman in a straw hat. This is the most quietly magnificent landscape in all of Kyushu.
What to expect
Your driver-guide collects you from Hakata Cruise Port for the 50-minute journey south to the 'Venice of Japan.' You board a low, lacquered punt and spend 70 minutes gliding beneath arched stone bridges while your boatman's traditional folk songs echo off the old walls. Disembarking, you walk to Ohana estate for its moss-and-pine stroll garden, then take lunch at a riverside restaurant specialising in Yanagawa's prized unagi (eel) steamed over rice — the region's defining dish.
Good to know
Yanagawa is 50–60 minutes from Hakata by private car or express train. The full excursion takes 4.5–5 hours; confirm your all-aboard before departure. The punt experience is seasonal (best March–November); in winter the water gardens are still walkable. Pre-book both the private guide and a lunch reservation at a riverside unagi-ya.
