Inuit Cultural Encounter at Torngat Base Camp: Living Heritage

Visit the Torngat Mountains Base Camp — the only permanent facilitated landing in the park — for an intimate immersive session with Labrador Inuit cultural hosts. Taste country food, hear drum-song traditions, and learn the ancient place-name stories of the Torngat.

What to expect

You arrive at the Base Camp's small cluster of comfortable tents and research facilities, welcomed by an Inuit host who offers bannock and tea before beginning the session. Elders share oral histories of the Torngat spirits (the 'Tornait') that give the mountains their name, while younger community members demonstrate traditional tools — ulus, kayak frames, and drum-dance rattles. A communal tasting of dried Arctic char and cloudberry preserves follows. The conversation that unfolds — about climate change, sovereignty, and resilience — is as intellectually nourishing as anything you will find in a city museum.

Good to know

The Base Camp operates July–August only; book your facilitated landing directly with the operator months in advance as space is limited to roughly 20 guests at a time. Photography of ceremonial elements should be done only with explicit permission from hosts. Dress warmly — even in summer, temperatures at Base Camp hover around 8–14°C. Zodiac transfer from ship to shore required; confirm with expedition staff.
