Don a drysuit and slip beneath the surface of Hudson Strait to discover a riot of cold-water kelp forests, sea urchins, and sculpin among the submerged quartzite boulders of the Savage Islands — an almost entirely unexplored marine world. Truly frontier exploration.
What to expect
A full land-based drysuit fitting and buoyancy briefing precedes your entry from a sheltered cobble beach. Water temperatures hover around 4–7°C but the drysuit keeps you fully warm, and clarity often exceeds 8 metres in calm conditions. Undersea life is extraordinary in its density: purple sea urchin carpets, blood-red encrusting sponges, and greenland cod hovering in thermocline layers. The guide carries a slate to annotate species as you encounter them; you surface with a personalised species checklist. Total in-water time is 30–45 minutes.
Good to know
Prior snorkel experience helpful but not required; swimming competency essential. Minimum age 16. Drysuit fitting takes 20 minutes — factor this into your shore time. Pre-book via Adventure Canada's expedition team at least 60 days in advance; places are limited to 6 per session.
