Lace up and follow an expert polar naturalist up Devon Island's sweeping tundra ridgelines for breathtaking panoramas over Lancaster Sound — one of the world's great Arctic seascapes — while discovering ancient marine fossils hidden underfoot.
What to expect
The hike begins at the beach landing zone and ascends gently across cushion-plant tundra, with your guide pointing out Arctic poppies, saxifrage, and fossilised coral from an ancient seabed. At the ridge, Lancaster Sound stretches to the horizon — on clear days, icebergs drift like white cathedrals across the blue water. The descent takes you through a glacially carved valley, where meltwater streams trickle between lichen-covered boulders. Every step feels like the edge of the world.
Good to know
Moderate fitness required; about 4–6 km round trip on uneven terrain. Sturdy, waterproof hiking boots essential. Weather windows in the Arctic are precious — this excursion is conditions-dependent; your expedition team will advise on the morning of the call.
