Ascend the only true hill for hundreds of kilometres — the sacred Ovayok — for a panoramic 360° view of Victoria Island, the Arctic coast, and the endless tundra. Rated a perfect 5.0 by visitors, this is Cambridge Bay's most dramatic natural landmark.
What to expect
The drive out to Ovayok Territorial Park itself is an Arctic adventure, crossing open tundra with caribou and Arctic hare often spotted en route. Your guide shares the Inuit legends tied to the hill — 'Ovayok' means a place of prominence — as you make the rewarding ascent. From the summit, Victoria Island stretches to every horizon, the bay glitters below, and on clear days the view is simply staggering. Wildflowers and lichen cling to the rocky slopes in summer, adding unexpected colour to the Arctic palette.

The park is roughly 20–25 minutes by vehicle from Cambridge Bay; a guide with transport is essential. The hike is moderately active — sturdy waterproof boots and windproof layers are a must. Allow 3–4 hours total. Best booked as a private excursion directly with Illu Inc.
