Engage directly with Inuit cultural interpreters who share traditional navigation methods, tool-making, and oral histories rooted in thousands of years of Arctic survival — a profoundly human counterpoint to the wilderness grandeur of Croker Bay.
What to expect
The session opens with a welcoming drum-song and an introduction to Inuktitut place-names for the bay and surrounding landmarks. Guides then walk guests through traditional qamutik (sled) construction techniques, the art of reading sea ice, and the preparation of country foods. Guests are invited to try throat-singing basics and handle replica tools from the Dorset and Thule cultures. The session closes with a storytelling circle recounting migration routes along this coastline.
Good to know
Photography is welcome but always ask permission before photographing individuals — the guide will advise on cultural protocol at the outset. Dress in warm, waterproof layers; the session takes place partly outdoors. Pre-register with Nunavut Tourism's expedition partner programme at least 90 days ahead; availability is extremely limited per vessel call.
