Navigate by Zodiac to the towering seabird colonies of Devon Island's cliffs, where hundreds of thousands of thick-billed murres, black-legged kittiwakes, and northern fulmars fill the air in a spectacle that rivals any wildlife encounter on Earth.
What to expect
Departing in the early morning when seabird activity peaks, the Zodiac cruises the base of the rust-coloured cliffs as the guide identifies species and explains the ecology of one of the Arctic's most productive marine environments. The din of tens of thousands of birds is extraordinary and disorienting in the best possible way. The guide uses a laser pointer to highlight individual nests and behaviours at height. Glaucous gulls, dovekies, and the occasional peregrine falcon add to the spectacle.
Good to know
Bring a 100–400 mm telephoto lens if you plan to photograph; the guide carries a high-power spotting scope for the group. Morning departures (6–9 am) deliver the best light and behaviour — confirm your vessel's excursion schedule as early as possible. Flotation suits and rubber boots are mandatory and provided by the operator.
