Step inside one of Vanuatu's most authentic living cultural villages and witness fire-walking, traditional kastom dance, and the ancient art of sand-drawing — a UNESCO-listed tradition found nowhere else on earth. Profound, moving, and entirely genuine.
What to expect
Greeted by warriors in traditional regalia, you're led through a recreated kastom village where community members demonstrate fire-starting, leaf-weaving, traditional cooking, and the hypnotic sand-drawing art form inscribed on UNESCO's Intangible Heritage list. The kastom dance performance — complete with drums and chant — is genuinely spine-tingling. Guides speak excellent English and welcome questions, making this a rich cultural exchange rather than a tourist tableau.
Good to know
The village is a 15-minute taxi ride from the cruise pier (approx. VUV 1,000 each way). Visits last 45–90 minutes — easily combined with the Blue Lagoon or a half-day island drive. Modest dress is appreciated; remove shoes when invited to do so.
