Walk the original Door of No Return on the Ouidah Slave Route, enter the living Python Temple, and trace Voodoo's birthplace in the city that exported it to the Americas. One of the most profound historical journeys in all of West Africa.
What to expect
Depart Cotonou by private air-conditioned vehicle for the 40-minute drive to Ouidah. Begin at the Portuguese Fort São João Batista, now the Musée d'Histoire de Ouidah, where your guide narrates the 17th-century slave trade with arresting precision. Enter the Python Temple — a Voodoo sanctuary where royal pythons drape over your shoulders if you choose. Walk the 4 km Slave Route to the Atlantic and stand before the haunting Door of No Return arch. End in the Sacred Forest among the ancient Iroko trees.
Good to know
Ouidah is ~40 km west of Cotonou port — allow 6 hours total. Entry fees to the museum and Sacred Forest are modest (CFA 2,000–5,000 per site); bring cash. January sees the Grand Voodoo Festival — extraordinary but extremely busy. Book a private vehicle in advance.
