Ascend to the rim of the Mahawu stratovolcano — one of North Sulawesi's most accessible yet dramatic craters — and gaze into an ethereal sulphur-tinged crater lake ringed by steaming vents. On clear days the panorama spans the Lembeh Strait, Ternate, and the Sangihe island chain. A genuinely rare, visceral encounter with the Pacific Ring of Fire.
What to expect
A private air-conditioned 4WD transfers you from port through highland villages and coffee plantations to the Mahawu trailhead at around 1,300 m elevation. The hike to the 1,461 m crater rim takes approximately 45 minutes on a well-maintained path through cloud-forest vegetation. At the summit, the vivid turquoise-green crater lake shimmers below fumarolic vents — a genuinely otherworldly scene. Your guide identifies endemic Sulawesi highland birds en route and explains the volcano's eruptive history. Cold drinks and local snacks are provided at the rim before the descent.
Good to know
Allow approximately 5–6 hours total. The road to the trailhead requires a 4WD — do not arrange this independently in a standard vehicle. Light rain gear recommended even in dry season; conditions at the rim can change quickly. Comfortable hiking shoes essential. Confirm all-aboard time with your guide when booking.
