For non-divers, a private snorkel safari across the Lembeh Strait's kaleidoscopic coral gardens delivers astonishing biodiversity — turtles, reef sharks, napoleon wrasse, and vivid nudibranchs — without needing certification. The Strait's sheltered waters make this one of the most rewarding snorkel experiences in all of Indonesia.
What to expect
A traditional wooden banca, fitted with shade canopy and comfortable seating, departs from the Lembeh waterfront with your private guide. Three or four distinct snorkel sites are visited across the morning, ranging from dramatic hard-coral pinnacles to sandy slopes where shy critters shelter. Your guide enters the water with you, pointing out leaf scorpionfish, ghost pipefish, and ornate ghostpipefish camouflaged on the reef. A fresh Indonesian lunch — grilled fish, rice, tropical fruit — is served on deck between sites under a swaying palm canopy.
Good to know
Suitable for confident swimmers; no diving certification required. Pre-book at least 2 weeks in advance on port-call days. Transfer from Bitung port to Lembeh jetty is 10–15 minutes by private car. Bring reef-safe sunscreen, a rash guard, and an underwater camera. Confirm all-aboard time so the guide structures your return accordingly.
