Slip into the crystal waters of Akaroa Harbour to swim alongside Hector's dolphins — the world's smallest and rarest. Set inside a stunning extinct volcanic crater on Banks Peninsula, this is one of the most extraordinary wildlife encounters on Earth.
What to expect
The scenic 90-minute drive from Lyttelton to Akaroa winds over the dramatic Banks Peninsula hills with panoramic Pacific views — a journey worth the trip alone. Onboard, a marine naturalist briefs you on Hector's dolphin ecology before you slip into a wetsuit (provided) and enter the water in a small supervised group. The dolphins are curious and playful, often approaching swimmers directly. Non-swimmers join a dedicated wildlife cruise spotting penguins, fur seals, and shags alongside the dolphins.
Good to know
Akaroa is approximately 85 km from Lyttelton — allow 1.5 hours each way; the full day requires 8–9 hours so verify your all-aboard time carefully. Wetsuits and snorkelling gear are included. Dolphin swims are weather and sea-condition dependent; book the swim licence well ahead as permits are strictly limited. A good-quality transfer can be arranged via Akaroa Shuttle (akaroashuttle.co.nz).
