Come face-to-face with the Tasmanian Devil — the world's largest surviving carnivorous marsupial — at the island's leading wildlife rescue sanctuary, just 25 minutes from the pier. A genuine conservation encounter that no zoo in the world can replicate.
What to expect
A guided walking tour of this 30-hectare sanctuary introduces you to Tasmania's iconic fauna — Tasmanian Devils snarling and wrestling over food, free-roaming eastern grey kangaroos that approach for a scratch, echidnas snuffling through leaf litter, and rare eastern quolls. Opt for the private keeper experience and you'll enter the Devil enclosure for a one-on-one briefing from a wildlife carer who knows each animal by name. The sanctuary's conservation mission is front and centre — this is storytelling about survival as much as it is wildlife watching. Wombat cuddle sessions (subject to availability) are a highlight for many guests.
Good to know
Bonorong is 25 km north of Hobart — approximately a 25-minute drive. Take a taxi or pre-book a private transfer from the pier. The general guided tour runs 1.5 hours; the keeper experience adds additional time. Allow 3.5 hours return for the full experience including travel, leaving ample buffer for most port schedules. Book the keeper experience directly on the Bonorong website well in advance — places are very limited.
